The Good Shepherds of the Ukrainian Churches

Under the threat of persecution and execution,  Martin Luther, the father of the Restoration Movement, sent a letter with these encouraging words to his followers throughout Germany and Europe, "those who are engaged in spiritual ministry preaching and pastoring must likewise remain steadfast before the peril of death." Luther based his words on Jesus's statement, "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.  But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. (John 10:11-12 ).

Historically, true apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers took Jesus's words to heart – and many were martyred.

Presently, many Baptists, Reformed Pentecostals, Orthodox Catholic shepherds, and others in Ukraine remain steadfast to their convictions. They are doing spiritual warfare,  plus earthly warfare as they set up medical aid stations and create hiding places for prayer and sanctuary for their flocks and anyone in need.

As you have probably heard, most men between 18-60 years old are required to stay to bear arms and defend the nation – this, of course, includes the believers. As they face the evil threat of imminent death, they agree with Martin Luther and Jesus's statement whether they know it or not.

In the same letter, Luther also wrote, "…when people are dying they most need a spiritual ministry that strengthens and comforts their consciences by word and sacrament with a faith that overcomes death. "
Luther meant they would live in heaven because of their faith that overcomes death.

Pastor Vasyl  Ostryi, a reform church shepherd who is standing fast in Ukraine, recently said, "how should the church respond when there is a growing threat of war and when there is a constant fear in society? "

He answers his question by saying,

"I am convinced that if the church is not relevant at a time of crisis, then it is

not relevant in a time of peace."

It's time for every godly leader to be entirely relevant for those around us and for those who are watching us! God is looking for faith-filled believers to rise and stand their ground like Jesus, the apostles, and thousands throughout history.

A crisis is an opportunity for His glory to shine through His people!

But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint. - Isaiah 40:31

We can, and we will be, strong leaders no matter what persecution comes our way. “Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God” (1 John 3:19).

Building together with Him and you,

John P. Kelly
